Chapter 8 – Stone Beads
Tie Zhu was deathly pale as he rose and looked around. He found himself in a small natural cave. Sunlight peeked through the entrance, revealing a floor covered in bird and animal bones.
In the wall behind him was a fist-sized black hole. He didn’t know how deep this small hole was, but upon closer inspection, one mystery was solved. The gravitational pull that had sucked him into the cave earlier originated from this hole. The animals whose bones were scattered about were being sucked in, just like him.
The suction from the hole must have been spontaneous. The moment he appeared in front of this cave while falling, the mysterious hole pulled him in and saved his life. Tie Zhu, enduring the pain in his right arm, was about to walk out of the cave when the bones on the ground suddenly began to move toward the hole. He quickly rolled to a corner of the cave without a moment’s delay when he felt the wind behind him.
An unimaginable suction force suddenly emerged from the small hole. All the bones trembled as they flew toward it. Some of the larger bones became stuck in the wall blocking the small hole.
At that moment, a bird was sucked in as it flew past the cave entrance. It soared through the air and crashed against the cave wall.
After about an hour, the force stopped pulling. Wang Lin stared in horror at the carcass of the freshly dead bird. He didn’t move at all, just sitting there, counting the time.
Half an hour later, the suction started again. This repeated several times. Wang Lin had already grasped the timing of the strange suction hole. The hole would start sucking every 30 minutes for 60 minutes.
Taking advantage of the gap between breaths, Wang Lin crawled with difficulty toward the cave entrance. As he looked down, he couldn’t help but smile bitterly. Below him was a forest, and the barely visible ground was covered in rocks. The cliff was extremely steep, and there was no way for him to climb down with his broken arm. He was more than a few dozen meters from the ground. If he tried to jump down, it would definitely be his end.
The bag of food was left on the mountaintop with no way to retrieve it. Right now, food was the most important problem he had to solve. As he pondered, he suddenly remembered the suction time and hurried back to the corner of the cave.
Time in the outside world seemed to pass quickly. Wang Lin could feel his body growing weaker. His arms were numb, completely numb. He smiled bitterly as he said to himself, “Being trapped here means a slow death, but jumping down means instant death.”
He stared at the bloodied carcass of the bird he had sucked earlier. With some hesitation, he walked over, picked it up, and reluctantly took a bite. The taste was terrible. He gasped as the raw meat in his mouth overwhelmed his senses, but then continued eating.
He barely chewed the meat, choosing to swallow it almost whole. Tie Zhu felt warmth enter his stomach as the meat churned. He quickly ate the bird in large bites, then stood up and took a deep breath to keep from vomiting it all out.
He threw the remains of the bird aside and sat down against the cave wall. His thoughts wandered, for a moment thinking of his parents, for a moment thinking of his fourth uncle, for a moment thinking of the mocking faces of his relatives, and for a moment he even thought of the cold gaze of the black-clad middle-aged man from the Heng Yue Sect.
In a daze, Wang Lin stared at the half-eaten bird carcass. Without blinking, he picked it up for a closer inspection. He saw that inside the bird’s carcass was a red bead the size of a baby’s middle finger. He was shocked when he removed it from the carcass.
Why are there beads on this bird’s body? Wang Lin’s heart pounded as he remembered the book his village teacher had shown him. Some animals lived to old age, and something called a dantian would form within their bodies.
If one eats the dantian, their life will be extended and their strength will increase. Even severed limbs will grow back.
When he saw the description, he didn’t believe it and secretly scoffed at it, but now he couldn’t help but believe more in myths and legends after meeting the immortals.
Wang Lin’s heart was pounding so hard it wanted to jump out of his chest. If this bead was truly the dantian described in the book, then consuming it would not only heal his injuries quickly, but it would also allow him to easily leave this place. Even passing the test to join the Heng Yue Sect should be possible, at least he would be able to pass the test of perseverance.
But the beads were very hard. They seemed inedible. He used the rags on his body to clean the beads, restoring them to their original color.
A gray bead, with five clouds engraved on it, was revealed. The bead looked extremely ancient. Wang Lin was extremely disappointed, unwilling to give up. He bit the bead, then silently laughed at himself. “Tie Zhu, you’re too delusional. How could a random bird that happened to fly by have a dantian?”
Wang Lin sighed. It was already dark outside. He felt tired and fell asleep with the beads beside him and animal bones covering the floor.
Since it was autumn, the temperature dropped rapidly, especially in the mountains. The cold air penetrated Wang Lin’s body. He curled up, and the night passed quickly.
The next morning, sunlight peeked out from outside the cave as the sun rose. A few drops of sparkling dew fell from the beads beside Wang Lin. As the dew collected, they dripped onto the nearby bones.
After a while, Wang Lin woke up. Not only was his arm still swollen, but his condition seemed to have worsened. Wang Lin sat on the floor, feeling extremely depressed.
Wang Lin muttered to himself, “Am I going to be trapped here for the rest of my life?” He slowly turned his head and looked at the dew that had gathered on the bones. Because he was thirsty, he carefully picked up a few bones and licked the dew off them.
The sweetness of the dew was quite delicious. He didn’t know if it was just his imagination, but his whole body felt warm and comfortable after drinking it.
Especially the wound on his arm. There was a sense of comfort and itching as the swelling subsided. Wang Lin rubbed his eyes and examined his arm closely. The swelling had indeed reduced. He immediately checked the surrounding bones but couldn’t find any more due to the dew on them.
At that moment, he suddenly looked at the bead and saw dewdrops on it. He remembered that all the bones covered in dew were next to the bead. He gently picked up the bead, his heart pounding, and rolled it in his arms to spread the dew evenly.
A wave of cool, refreshing sensation came from his arm. Wang Lin stared at his arm without blinking. After a moment, his eyes lit up. The swelling in his arm had subsided. He tried waving his arm. Although it still hurt, it wasn’t a big deal.
“This stone bead must be a treasure!” Wang Lin was surprised and delighted. Chapter 8 – Stone Bead
