Chapter Highlights:

  • A forgotten inscription marks the city’s entrance.
  • A quiet inn offers refuge.
  • A weary traveler seeks rest and lodging.

At the entrance of the city stood a very weathered stone stele, the writing of which was now blurry and illegible, with only a few faintly visible scratches remaining.

There were no high city walls or guards patrolling the city; the few scattered lamps emitted a dim yellow light in the dusk, making the narrow streets appear dimly lit.

The three landed on a remote land slope outside the city, concealed their presence, and set off on foot towards the city.

There were not many pedestrians in the city, and their faces looked calm with a hint of numbness, as if they had long been accustomed to the scarcity of resources in this land.

David’s gaze swept across the street and fell on an inn with an old wooden plaque hanging on the wall.

The letters on the plaque were faded and worn, but the words “Return Journey Inn” could still be faintly read.

The door of the inn was half open, and dim light and faint voices could be heard coming from inside, creating a warm atmosphere.

“This is enough.” David stepped in.

The lobby of the inn was small, with five or six square tables arranged. An oil lamp was burning in the corner, its flickering light casting a faint glow on several faces.

Behind the counter sat a thin, gray-haired old man, asleep with drooping eyelids. He slowly raised his eyes when he heard someone coming in, and his gaze swept across the three people.

Seeing that their dress and behavior were not like the locals, he did not ask further, only lazily saying, “Staying in an inn? Three rooms, two low-grade spirit stones per night.”

David took out a low-grade spiritual stone of sufficient purity from his storage ring and placed it on the table. The old man glanced at it, a flash of cunning flashed in his eyes, then neatly put it away.

Then he handed over three brass keys: “The three rooms at the end of the second floor are next to each other. Hot water is in the backyard. Prepare your own food in the kitchen, just don’t break anything.”

The three of them went up to the second floor and rested.

The room was simple but clean enough, with a wooden bed, a square table, and a small north-facing window, through which gray twilight and dim lamps illuminated the room.

David sat by the bed, closed his eyes and controlled his breathing for a moment, slowly calming the fatigue accumulated from days of travel. The source of chaos flowed smoothly in his body, as calm and powerful as the water in a deep pool.

Not long after, there was the sound of Xuanzhenzi pushing open the door next door, followed by a knock.

David got up and opened the door. Xuan Zhenzi stood in the doorway, holding two bowls of coarse porridge that were still hot. Jiang Xuelan also came out from another room and took one of the bowls.

“This town may be small, but its residents are knowledgeable.”
