Please read this chapter.
- Mysterious figures are spotted in the mist.
- An unsettling vibration suggests a living presence.
- Skeletal remains are discovered in an open space.
David didn’t answer.
His gaze was fixed ahead, where several blurry figures could faintly be seen amidst the mist.
Its bent and irregular shape resembles a dead tree or the rubble of a collapsed building.
“Is anyone home?” Xuanzhenzi called out hesitantly.
The sound echoed in the gray space, getting farther and farther away, but there was never an echo.
A faint vibration was felt from the soles of David’s feet.
At first it felt like a very gentle, rhythmic throbbing, like a heartbeat, then gradually strengthened, traveling from the soles of the feet through the knees, up the spine and straight to the crown of the head, as if space itself were a living, breathing creature.
“He’s watching us.”
David’s voice was very gentle, “Whatever it is, it knows we’re in.”
They continued to walk forward. The gray mist slowly enveloped them from behind, as if it had never been disturbed.
After walking for about the time it takes an incense stick to burn, a wide open space stretched out ahead.
Lots of white objects were scattered on the open ground. At first, David thought it was rubble, but when he got closer, he realized it was a skeleton.
The skeletons, some intact and some broken, were strewn across the black ground like carelessly discarded rubbish.
Some of the skeletons looked like they had been there for thousands of years, with white bones on their weathered and blackened surfaces.
Some of them are relatively intact, and you can even vaguely see the remains of clothing still attached to the skeletons.
David squatted down and carefully examined the relatively intact skeleton at his feet.
There was a perfectly round hole in his chest, with smooth and mirror-like edges, as if it had been penetrated instantly by some kind of high-temperature force.
There is a dark brown deposit on the inner wall of the hole, which has completely calcified and is no longer visible.
“Are these all the people sacrificed here?” Jiang Xuelan’s voice trembled slightly.
David nodded: “And that investigation team. They all died here.”
Xuanzhenzi squatted beside the skeleton and reached out to touch the relatively intact skeleton.
The moment his fingertip touched the skull, the skeleton suddenly made a very faint cracking sound, and a crack appeared on the skull.
Then the entire skeleton collapsed into a pile of white powder like quicksand, raising a cloud of fine ash, and leaving not a single bone intact.
Xuanzhenzi gasped as if he was on fire: “Gosh! This thing can be damaged with just a light touch?”
The bones were scattered across the black ground, like withered twigs that had been thrown away.
