Chapter 112

Jasmine and Serenity’s conversation was interrupted as Liberty and Sonny walked in. Serenity immediately stopped her work, stood up, and moved around the cashier.

Jasmine, quicker than Serenity, had already swooped up Sonny and was showering him with affection. She lifted him high, causing the little boy to laugh with delight.

“Liberty, what brings you here?” Serenity asked, noting the time. It was past ten o’clock, a time when Liberty would usually be preparing lunch at home. Hank would likely be complaining if he came home to find no meal waiting for him.

“I was bored at home, so I decided to drop by. Sonny was also clamoring to see you,” Liberty explained.

She removed her hat, wiped the sweat from her forehead, and added, “It’s almost November, but it’s still so hot! Wiltspoon’s fall is more like summer, and it doesn’t get cold until winter. It’s only cool in the mornings and evenings, but during the day, it’s still sweltering if the sun is out.”

“It’s past ten o’clock. Don’t you have to cook, Liberty?” Serenity inquired. She didn’t think it was her sister’s duty to cook for her brother-in-law, but she was curious since most people ate around noon.

“I fed Sonny before coming here and brought his milk powder along, so he can play here until the afternoon. I’ll either order takeout with you later or go to the nearby market to buy some ingredients and cook for you girls in your small kitchen. As for your brother-in-law, I’ve already measured the pasta and filled a pot with water for him. All he has to do is boil it when he gets home. I’ve washed some vegetables and left them aside in the kitchen. He can blanch or stir-fry them himself,” Liberty said.

Jasmine, overhearing Liberty, laughed. “Liberty, are you just doing half the work for him?”

“Since we’re splitting everything, we should split everything evenly! What’s the point of this system if I’m doing all the housework? He wanted to go halves, but he thought it only applied to expenses,” Liberty explained.

Liberty’s recent experiences with Hank had left her disheartened. She had been resolute in her approach to fairness, wanting to hold Hank accountable for his behavior. For three years of marriage, she had made countless concessions—raising their son, quitting her job, losing her figure, and facing disrespect. She felt that if she didn’t stand up for herself, Hank would see her as weak and easily controlled.

Both Serenity and Jasmine applauded Liberty’s stance. They agreed that if Hank wanted to split things equally, he needed to experience the full impact of that agreement.

“Hank was so considerate to Liberty back then. It hasn’t been that long since they got married. What an eye-opener…” Jasmine reflected. Marriage seemed to transform romance into routine.

Jasmine, still not ready for marriage herself, was content to enjoy her freedom for a while longer.

Liberty, with a touch of resentment, said, “My mother-in-law and sister-in-law stirred up all this trouble. He trusts his family too much.”
