Chapter 119
“Hank, you want to split everything with my sister when she doesn’t have a job. She’s at home raising your child, yet you expect her to go halves with you. What’s the point of having a husband if that’s the case?” Serenity said, her voice rising with frustration.
“You often say my sister doesn’t do anything at home, so she decided to take a break today. But even then, she still did part of the work. She bought the ingredients, measured the pasta, and prepared a pot of water for you. All you had to do was cook it yourself.”
Hank opened his mouth to respond, but Serenity continued, not giving him a chance to speak. “Hank, do you think the house cleans itself every day? Sonny is still young and makes a mess with his toys, and he can’t clean up after himself.
“You don’t think those toys put themselves away, do you? And who do you think takes care of your meals every day? Isn’t it my sister who does your dirty laundry too? Didn’t she prepare three meals a day for you?
“You only resent my sister for not having a job and income. If it weren’t for her taking care of the household, would you be able to focus on your work? This home is shared by both of you. My sister handles the household while you’re the breadwinner. You can’t claim she does nothing just because she doesn’t have a job. In fact, she has it harder than you. Why don’t you switch roles with her? You can handle the laundry, cooking, baby care, and house cleaning while my sister goes to work.”
Hank opened his mouth several times, but after being confronted by Serenity, he was left speechless. After a while, he muttered, “Serenity, I only made one comment, and you gave me such a long lecture as if I’ve mistreated your sister. Aren’t you busy with your store? If it’s not profitable, you might as well close it and find a job.”
He continued, “Since Zachary works at a big company, you could ask him to help you get a position there. It’s better to earn a few thousand dollars a month than to run a business.”
Serenity replied coldly, “You don’t need to worry about my finances. I earn enough to cover my expenses and have some spare change.”
“I— I’m going to cook,” Hank said, knowing his sister-in-law was angry and wanting to avoid further confrontation. He turned and went back to the kitchen.
Serenity took a few deep breaths. Liberty wasn’t ready for a divorce yet, so Serenity had to endure Hank’s behavior for now. If Hank dared to complain about her sister again when Liberty prepared for a divorce, Serenity would confront him fiercely.
She entered Liberty’s room and saw her sitting on the edge of the bed, gently touching Sonny. Serenity knew Liberty was putting up with this situation for her child. Seeing Serenity enter, Liberty got up and walked towards her, saying softly, “Serenity, don’t worry about me. Your brother-in-law won’t listen to anything you say. I’ll protect myself until I’m ready to let go of him.”
“Aren’t you going to buy a gift for Zachary? You should go now. I’m fine,” Liberty said, urging Serenity to leave.
“Then I’ll go shopping now. Call me if you need anything, and let me know if he dares to hit you. I will never allow anyone to hurt my sister!” Serenity replied firmly.
Liberty nodded. She had endured so much for the sake of her love for Hank, but now she only felt disappointment. She was staying in this situation temporarily for Sonny, as she wasn’t in a position to gain custody. Once she was capable of supporting herself, Hank would no longer be able to threaten her.
Serenity left as Liberty urged her to.
When Serenity left, Hank had just finished cooking a dish and brought it out from the kitchen. Seeing Serenity about to leave, he asked perfunctorily, “Serenity, have you eaten?”
“Yeah,” Serenity responded casually and left.
Hank, having only prepared one dish from what Liberty had initially planned, tasted the food and spat it out immediately, clearly displeased.
